This scan captures a decorated architectural block from the Water Temple of Zaghouan, an ancient Roman sanctuary built in the 2nd century CE under Emperor Hadrian. The temple marked the monumental starting point of the Zaghouan aqueduct, which carried water over 90 kilometers to the city of Carthage. The block is carved with laurel motifs, a recurring symbol in Roman architecture associated with triumph, eternity, et divine favor. Its rhythmic pattern reflects the refined craftsmanship of Roman stonecutters, who combined durability with ornamentation. Though now displaced from its original position, this block once contributed to the temple’s monumental appearance, crowning or lining parts of the sanctuary’s structure. The temple itself was not only a feat of hydraulic engineering but also a sacred site, dedicated to water as both a physical necessity et a divine gift. Location: Temple des Eaux, Zaghouan, Tunisia 📌 Part of the Tanit XR Digital.
