Notre responsable scientifique, Laura K. Harrison, et Caroline Nickerson ont passé une matinée à numériser des poteries de Sejnane avec leur téléphone. Bety Vega, one of our volunteers, filmed the session and cut it into a short video.

As Laura moves around a pot, her phone takes pictures from different angles. The app matches points across those pictures, rebuilds the shape, and lays the colours and painted details over it. The result is an object you can turn, zoom into and explore.

These pots scan well because their matte surfaces give the app plenty of detail to track. One tip from the session: more scanning is not always better. Going over the same areas again and again can introduce errors. The goal is careful, complete coverage.

Sejnane pottery is handmade by women in northern Tunisia and decorated with designs taken from local plants and animals. UNESCO lists the tradition as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Most of this work is done by volunteers. We meet on Zoom every Thursday at 12 pm ET to learn, share scans and document heritage. Anyone can join, from anywhere: volunteer with us.
