On Friday 23 October 2026 the Embassy of Tunisia in Washington, DC opened its doors for an evening called Tunisia & America, Learning Together, hosted with Tanit XR and the Tunisian American Young Professionals (TAYP). The room filled with Tunisians, friends of Tunisia, students and people who work where technology, art and public service meet.
Ines Said, who founded Tanit XR, opened with the story of why a Tunisian developer started scanning Carthage with a phone, and showed the collection live. Dr. Caroline Nickerson, who leads partnerships and community at Tanit XR, spoke about her year with the project and her time in Tunisia this summer, working alongside Tunisian colleagues at the sites themselves.
Then the headsets came out. Guests stood inside the collection in VR, turned a stela from the Tophet of Salammbo in their hands and walked through places that are two hours' flight from Washington and two thousand years away.
Our thanks to the Embassy of Tunisia for hosting us, to TAYP for co-organising, and to everyone who came, asked questions and tried the collection. If you were in the room and want to keep going, the whole collection is open at tanitxr.org/explore, the volunteers meet every Thursday on Zoom, and anyone can join.
