🏺 What our volunteers create
From a phone scan to a museum-ready model
Volunteers scan sites on the ground, optimize models for VR, write articles, and model heritage
objects by hand, like these.
How do I join?
Fill in the
volunteer form and tell us what you enjoy doing. Someone from the team writes back, adds you to Slack, and you meet everyone on the next Thursday call. That is the whole process.
Do I need to know 3D, or archaeology?
No. Our first scans were made with a phone by someone who had never scanned anything. People here write, design, research, teach, translate, organise trips, model objects, clean up scans, apply for grants and run our social media. If you are curious about Tunisia's history, there is a place for you.
Is it paid?
Not yet. Everyone at Tanit XR is a volunteer, including the founders, and most costs so far have come out of our own pockets. We will never ask volunteers to work so that someone else earns; when funding arrives, the first people we want to pay are the volunteers on the ground in Tunisia.
How much time does it take?
As much as you can give. Tasks are small and self-contained: one scan to clean up, one object to research, one article to write. Some people come to the Thursday call every week, some appear once a month. You set the pace and you can pause whenever life gets busy.
How do you work together?
Mostly on Slack, across four continents and as many time zones. Once a week we meet on a call, Thursdays at 12 pm Eastern, 5 pm in Tunisia, to look at new scans, learn the history behind them and help each other with whatever is stuck. Julia records a short history lesson each week for anyone who cannot make it.
What do I get out of it?
Your work is credited to you, on your own page here and on every model you touch. You learn photogrammetry, 3D and XR by doing them on real heritage. Students get portfolio reviews, mock interviews and mentoring from people working in the field. And you become part of a community that genuinely likes each other.
I run an organisation. Can we work with you?
Please write. We work with universities, museums, mapping communities and nonprofits, in Tunisia and beyond. The Unique Mappers in Nigeria are the first community bringing the model to a second country. Reach us at
